Things just got more complicated for the New York Cosmos.

Facing an opportunity to overtake sole possession of the NASL table, the Cosmos instead fell to FC Edmonton at Clarke Field 2-1. Midfielder Jason Plumhoff and defender Pape Diakite scored for the home side while Yohandry Orozco found net for New York.

“We created chances,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “We had opportunities, but the reality was that our play in the second half wasn’t the same as the first half.”

The Eddies took the lead just 13 minutes into the match, with Plumhoff burying a Dustin Corea long ball far post. Nine minutes later, Orozco leveled the match for New York, sinking a Jairo Arrieta square ball across the 18.

In total, the Cosmos played a dominating match, with over 60% possession on the night.

“When the team is on the right track we’re able to create some good plays, some special situations,” Savarese said. “We have players who can make a difference. With Orozco, we’re seeing more and more of his quality each game. He’s still not [playing] to the best of his abilities.”

However, poor defending bit the Cosmos in the 74th minute as Pape Diakite slammed a header past Jimmy Maurer for the game winner.

“In the end they built up confidence, and it’s always difficult when you play against a team that all of a sudden feels they can win a game,” said Savarese. “Then it becomes a tougher match.”

The Cosmos enter the final three game stretch of the Spring season, hosting Joe Cole and the Tampa Bay Rowdies this Sunday at Shuart Stadium.

Cosmos is not physically prepared for the season. This is third game I only see ( and I didn’t see all of them) that they out in second half. There should be talk about warning coach that he must take his job more seriously. He is like holy cow here, created Latina copa, instead of Cosmos, which was always multicultural, therefore so strong, now is not working. Better sign up some stronger players from Europe. Future doesn’t look promising.

Sloppy, unorganized and no sense of urgency what so ever in the 2nd half.

they looked very good in the first half with good passing some excellent one on one play from Orozco and the opportinuties just vanished in the second half. Peculiar performance. Lacked of structure and urgency in the second half. For my money I need to see Lucky in there instead of Arrietta.
