In theory, the 20th Major League Soccer season begins this Friday night when the LA Galaxy host the Chicago Fire.

If you’ve been paying close attention, you know just how theoretical that is: the collective bargaining agreement has not been finalized and a players’ strike threatens to delay the season. But now is as good a time as any to preview the league’s 20 teams and what they can expect in the year to come.

We start today with the Eastern Conference: 10 teams, six of whom will qualify for the playoffs at the end of the season. There are new faces in the East, namely the expansion teams in Orlando and New York City, who replaced Kansas City and Houston.  The New England Revolution stormed their way to the conference championship last year, and enter this year as the clear favorites.

Without further ado, here are the previews.

Six teams make the Eastern Conference playoffs this year. As ridiculous as that may sound, even worse is that NYRB will not be one of them. NYCFC has a better chance.
