The New York Cosmos have embraced New York City throughout it’s “reboot” efforts.
In fact, if you speak to club executives, they will be quick to admit that the Big Apple, along with the club’s fabled history, has played a vital role in attracting players to the fledgling side. They have even celebrated that fact by prominently displaying city landmarks as a backdrop to their player signings.
Now, they are set to use the biggest city landmark of all to usher in their resurrection.
According to the Empire State Buildings own schedule of events, the celebrated building spear is set to go all-green on August 1st to commemorate the New York Cosmos August 3rd NASL Fall Championship debut. The team is set to meet long time rivals the Fort Lauderdale Striker, at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium.
And who will be doing the honors of flicking the switch? Cosmos legend Pele.
This would not be the first time a local pro side has reflected their team’s colors on the iconic landmark. The New York Red Bulls have done it three times already; once for the debut of Red Bull Arena and twice during the 2012 season for the home opener and their friendly against Tottenham.
The Empire State Building lighting follows the Cosmos blanket marketing efforts which have included local radio spots on both WFAN and ESPN Deportes, bus advertising on Queens and Nassau County transportation lines and local player appearances as well.
