New year, new attitude.

The New York Red Bulls looked relentless on the pitch, taking a 3-0 decision over the Charleston Battery in the third round of U.S. Open Cup play. A slow start to the match was violently interrupted by a 14th minute Kenny Cooper blast in the box. From there, the Red Bulls dictated the pace with a non-stop, aggressive flow against an overwhelmed Battery defense.

“We talked about our attitude, the way we need to handle a game like this,” Red Bulls coach Hans Backe said. “We cant give away anything, we cant cheat, we cant play casual football.”

Heath Pearce earned his first goal as a Red Bull off of a clever header while Connor Lade stole the headlines with a Beckham-esque curler from about 25 yards out that beat the Battery keeper upper 90.

The win, accompanied with an epic collapse by the New England Revolution, sets New York up for a Harrisburg tilt as the team travels to Pennsylvania next week for the fourth round of the tournament.

  • Dave – thanks much for posting NE high/lowlights. Sounds like the craziest game ever!
    Announcer was good too.

RB – decent performance. Got the job done. Encouraging points as you noted.

    • Wish the Revs game would have been live streamed as well. Quite the finish. NY has their work cut out against the Isles.

  • Larry

    Great Result for NYRB
