Jefferson Mena and Frederic Brillant have suffered their barbs, both at the pens of the media and from the mouths of the NYCFC faithful.

But on Sunday, both proved their worth.

Signed with much promise last year, Mena has consistently fallen short of expectations for NYCFC. Yet against the Red Bulls, he was as shutdown as a center back can be. The Colombian defender continuously stopped the Red Bull attack by clogging the middle, beating his markers and intelligently clearing balls from danger. Finally, he was the leader everyone expected him to be.

And what of Brillant? Own goals and boneheaded plays did not haunt him this time as he found his place next to the outstanding Mena, helping to stave off the Red Bulls’ high press.

Like NYCFC as a whole, Mena and Brillant were out to prove themselves. On this day, they certainly did.
