Flemmings puts Red Bulls II past Riverhounds

by ANTHONY J. MERCED

HARRISON, N.J. – Junior Flemmings was once again the lone goalscorer as New York Red Bull II wins their second straight game against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Red Bull Arena Saturday night.

The game was the second part of a double header that saw players like Sean Davis and Brandon Allen make both MLS and USL appearances.

The game was far less contentious than the meeting that took place just three weeks ago. During that game, Romeo Parkes was red carded and subsequently released by Pittsburgh following his vicious kick to Karl Ouimette.

Both teams played a strong game on Saturday, but with far less emotion.

New York kicked off with a blazing start as they dominated possession and created numerous chances in the first ten minutes. Their tenacity was rewarded in the eighth minute when a pass from Brandon Allen found the feet of Junior Flemmings. The Jamaican international had patience, taking a touch before beating Pittsburgh goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas. Pittsburgh did not take the goal lying down. Despite giving up many more opportunities, including a freekick from Sean Davis that rang off the post, Pittsburgh pushed forward. However, their offense did not have the sharpness of New York’s.

The second half was far more even as three substitutions saw Sean Davis, Brandon Allen and Justin Bilyeu came off the field. All of those players were on the bench for the MLS Red Bull game earlier in the evening. Pittsburgh saw more of the ball with Ryan Meara even having to make a big save on Corey Hertzog early in the second half. New York continued to have spells of possession but did not produce the same attack they did earlier in the game.

Next up New York will travel to Lehigh Valley to play Bethlehem Steel FC. NYRB II has been perfect on the road and hopes to continue their good form to solidify their spot in the Eastern Conference.
