Sunderland climbed out of the relegation zone and snapped a two-game losing streak Monday afternoon. Steven Fletcher was the fulcrum for the success in their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Fletcher opened the scoring in the 31st minute against the run of play. He headed past Julian Speroni after connecting with a Patrick van Aanholt cross.

However, it was an own goal that reared its head again 10 minutes after the second half began. Costel Pantilimon, who was in for the dropped Vito Mannone, made a great save to keep Maroaune Chamakh‘s header. Frazier Campbell back-heeled the ball towards goal and Wes Brown, trying to defend, kicked it into his own net.

Jordi Gomez returned the lead to the Black Cats with a low strike from distance in the 79th minute. He let a William Buckley pass roll across his body and his left-footed strike with his first touch went past Pantilimon at the far post.

Palace’s Mile Jedinak was sent off for a second yellow card in the 87th minute with a poor tackle on Gomez and the Sunderland eventually capitalized to seal the win.

Fletcher bagged his brace with a lofted shot past Pantilimon in the fifth minute of stoppage time. He took a touch after Liam Bridcutt‘s pass and found the side-netting with his attempt on goal.
