Former Cosmos striker Arrieta signs with Herediano

Former New York Cosmos striker Jairo Arrieta has found a new home.

The 33-year-old Costa Rican has left behind the tumult of his former club, joining Herediano of the Costa Rican league.

“Honestly, I am very grateful to the club, to Jafet Soto and Hernán Medford, for keeping me in mind. I am happy to come to an institution with solid grounding in one of the best (clubs) in the country.

“I hope to pay back that confidence with my work.”

He is the first of the former Cosmos to find a new club.

Arrieta appeared in 26 matches with the Cosmos, earning 20 starts and scoring seven goals and four assists. He was the third leading scorer on the team, trailing only Venezuelan playmaker Juan Arango (15) and Adam Moffat (8). Arrieta joined the Cosmos after a disappointing stint with DC United. While earning several starts, the Costa Rican striker was streaky for the Cosmos, unable to secure his spot as the team’s true number one starter. However, he shouldered much of the scoring in spurts, besting marks by Yohandry Orozco, Yasmani Duk and Lucky Mkosana

As first reported on EoS, Arrieta was cut by the New York Cosmos last week, along with several other rostered players. Like his fellow teammates, he will not be paid for the month of December but is expecting his team bonus money and any potential outstanding pay from the club.
