NYCFC adds former U18 coach Javier Perez and former EDS coaches to staff

New York City FC announced former US U18 Men’s National Team head coach Javier Perez and former Manchester City Elite Development Squad technical coordinator Christian Lattanzio will join the team as assistant coaches under head coach Patrick Vieira.

NYCFC also named Kristian Wilson as Performance Coach and Matthew Cook as Physical Performance Coach. Wilson, Cook and Lattanzio all previously worked with Vieira and the EDS squad. Perez previously worked with NYCFC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna when Reyna was the federation’s Youth Technical Director.

“I am delighted that Javier, Christian, Kristian and Matt have agreed to join the team,” Vieira said. “They are high caliber coaches who understand my and philosophy and will make a significant contribution to this Club. It was important for me to work with people I know and trust, but also, in Javier, to bring in someone alongside [goalkeeping coach] Rob Vartughian who has an excellent understanding of US Soccer and MLS.”

Perez’s hire is the most notable amongst those in American soccer circles. He has been working with the U18s since February 2012 when Reyna named him as head coach. He previously served as director of coaching with the New York Soccer Club, one of NYCFC’s youth affiliates.

Lattanzio worked closely with Vieira at Manchester City’s EDS squad focusing on tactical and technical coaching during his six-year stint with the club. He also has previous experience working under Fabio Capello when he was in charge of the English National Team.

Wilson focused on establishing individual training programs for Manchester City’s youth players since joining the staff in June 2013. Cook previously served as Manchester City’s Head of Sports Strength and Conditioning.
