Former Red Bull Jonny Steele joins Newcastle Jets

The mystery surrounding Jonny Steele‘s future is over.

The former New York Red Bull midfielder has signed a two-year deal with A-League side, Newcastle Jets.

“I spoke to David Carney and Tim Cahill about the Newcastle Jets and the A-League itself and they both had plenty of good things to say,” Steele told the Newcastle Herald. “It’s a growing league with lots of opportunities, and now I’m just looking forward to getting to Newcastle and seeing for myself what it is all about.”

Steele joined the New York Red Bulls as a depth player with little expectation of making an impact in 2013. Instead, the Northern Ireland international became New York’s everyday starter, helping the team towards their first trophy in their 17 year existence.

This season has been a bit more difficult for Steele. The signing of former U.S. Men’s National Team veteran Bobby Convey in the offseason was the first sign that the club may be looking to move in a different direction. Convey, viewed to be the team’s new first-choice left midfielder, presented a challenge to Steele’s position. As it turned out, neither would be the favorite at the spot with the versatile Eric Alexander beating both to starting minutes, leaving the once sure-starter out in the cold.

With Newcastle, Steele sees an opportunity to earn minutes and make an impact — just as he did in New York.

“I’m a hard-working player who gives 100 per cent every time I’m on the field, and that’s what I’ll look to bring to the Jets,” he said.

Newcastle finished seventh in the A-League’s ten team table last season. Steele will be reunited with former Red Bull teammate David Carney on the club.
