Former Union defender Amobi Okugo trialing with Red Bulls

With their centerback corps dropping like flies, the New York Red Bulls are dipping into the market for outside solutions.

Former Philadelphia Union defender Amobi Okugo is in training camp with the Red Bulls and looking to make his way onto the roster.

“He could be a short term and long term solution,” Red Bulls boss Jesse Marsch said. “That is why we have him here — to give him a good look and to see how he fits in the way we do things.”

Okugo is currently unattached to any club, waived by Sporting KC towards the end of the team’s preseason training camp. He featured in just three matches for Sporting last year, scoring a goal in that span. Prior to that, he was a member of Orlando City SC, where he made 15 appearances earlier that year. His most successful tenure in MLS, however, came as a part of the Philadelphia Union backline, where he featured from 2010-2014, playing a starting role from 2012-2014.

That experience makes Okugo an enticing stopgap for an injury-ravaged Red Bulls backline.

“He is still young,” Marsch notes of the 25-year-old player. “He had a really good year in Philly three years ago as centerback. We know he has good qualities to fit there, he is good on the ball so we will look at it.”

we need much more than this. I guess this disasterous season will goes hand in hand with the move of the franchise at the end of the season and eventual rebranding to another soft drink.

to be honest I have heard about rebranding the Red Bulls from many people. They may be hurting for cash and for a team identity. They are invisible in the tristate area as far as exposure and coverage. Noone really talks Red Bull soccer no one really cares. Just being honest. Thanks
