Former Watford, Rapids keeper Ian Joyce training with Cosmos

While the Cosmos have bolstered their depth at forward and defense, their goalkeeping options remain quite thin.

Enter Ian Joyce. The former Colorado Rapids and Watford backup has been training with the club since the start of preseason camp. He is the second keeper from the Colorado ranks to test his mettle with New York following the steps of towering West Haverstraw netminder Steward Ceus, who recently ended his trial with the club.

Joyce, 28, is a New Jersey native and a product of Seton Hall and Don Bosco Prep. While he did not feature for a club in 2013, he does have a colorful resume. Joyce moved to England after graduating and featured in Sunday league sides Grays Athletic and Harlow Town before landing as a backup in Watford in 2007. In 2009, he moved to League One side Southend United where he featured in all of two matches over two years. The Kinnelon native then returned Stateside, finding a home with the Colorado Rapids as a backup.

As of now, New York boasts all of one goalkeeper officially on roster; Jimmy Maurer. Kyle Reynish has since moved on to the Chicago Fire and Chad Calderone was cut by the team. The lone holdover from last year’s crop, Maurer, 25, seems the only option to start this Spring. A former Supplemental Draft pick for the New York Red Bulls, Maurer has since played as a starter for the Atlanta Silverbacks in 2011 before moving towards Chile’s Universidad de Concepci√≥n in 2012. He earned a single start last season, shutting out his former team just prior to the Cosmos’ Soccer Bowl victory.
