“Frankie’s New York Adventure” debuts months prior to Lampard’s NYCFC arrival

However, the release of his children’s book offers one final blush on the “Lampardgate” scandal.

“Frankie’s New York Adventure,” the ninth children’s novel in the “Frankie’s Magic Football series, is set for a February release. The timing of his book was supposed to coincide with his arrival at NYCFC this March.

Those plans have since changed, lending a modicum of embarrassment to what was an already muddied situation.

For those unfamiliar with “Lampardgate,” the former Chelsea star was introduced to New York City this summer as the team’s latest Designated Player signing, joining Spanish superstar David Villa at the fledgling club. Weeks later, a deal is announced between parent club Manchester City and NYCFC which would send Lampard on loan to the Premier League giants through January 1st. Mere hours from the turn of the New Year, an extension is announced seeing Lampard stay in England through the end of the Premiership season — and leaving NYCFC to scramble for an explanation.

As it turns out, the arrangement was not as clear cut as originally assumed. Lampard was never signed on with New York City FC. Instead, his commitment was with the City Football Group; Manchester’s global footballing apparatus. When signed on for City, he actually committed himself to contract with the defending Premier League champions.

In other words, there was never a loan in place.

Eventually, Lampard did sign an agreement to join NYCFC, assuring his arrival his for July — and ending what was an embarrassing, unsightly situation for both club and player.

“Frankie’s New York Adventure” is set for release on February 5th.
