New York City FC are set to sign French centerback Frédéric Brillant on a free transfer from KV Oostende, Empire of Soccer has learned.

EoS confirmed reports by the Brussels-based Het Laatste Nieuws that Brillant is at the City Football Academy in Manchester undergoing a physical. According to a source, Brillant has yet to finalize the terms of his contract with NYCFC.

Brillant is under contract with the Belgian club until May 2017, but Oostende are willing to let him leave without a transfer fee. The right-footed center back has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season. He has also deputized at right back.

At 6’2″, Brillant would be the tallest defender on NYCFC’s roster. He is the third addition to the club’s defense this offseason after NYCFC signed left back Ronald Matarrita from Alajuelense and acquired center back Ethan White in a trade with the Philadelphia Union.

Brillant would be NYCFC’s tenth player to use an international spot. NYCFC are given eight international spots on an annual basis. The club acquired two additional spots in separate trades with D.C. United and LA Galaxy.

NYCFC declined to comment on this story.
