PITTSBURGH, PA. – The U.S. Women’s National Team, Costa Rica encounter was a friendly in name only.

Opening the first of ten “Victory Tour” matches against their southern neighbors, the USWNT put on a relentless display, downing the Central American nation 8-0 in front of 44,028 fans at Heinz Field — a record attendance for soccer in the city of Pittsburgh.

Christen Press scored a hat trick while Heather O’Reilly added a brace under the hot Pennsylvania sun. Julie Johnston, Whitney Engen and Meghan Klingenberg rounded out the USWNT scorers.

O’Reilly opened the scoring just four minutes into the match, intercepting a Costa Rican pass and jetting past their midfield on goal, beating Dinna Diaz for the early lead. Press made it 2-0 in the 29th minute, knocking in her own rebound with a left footed knock to double the USWNT lead.

Julie Johnston added to Costa Rica’s woes in the 37th minute, heading home a Megan Rapino cross. The USWNT ended the first half up 4-0 with Press adding her second of the evening.

Hope Solo entered the match in the second half for Ashlyn Harris and was immediately tested, managing a toe-poke save on a Karla Villabolos breakaway to maintain the combined clean sheet.

Hometown girl Klingenberg made the most of a Tobin Heath feed, knocking in her opportunity and celebrating her goal with a Pittsburgh trademark — the Terrible Towel, handed to her by head coach Jill Ellis. O’Reilly added her second of the match in the 6oth minute to put the USWNT up six goals.

Abby Wambach came off the bench and played provider, nodding a corner towards Whitney Engen for the seventh goal of the night. Press sealed her hat trick in the waning minutes to round out the scoring at 8-0.

The Victory Tour continues on the 19th as the U.S. Women once again face off against Costa Rica, this time at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn.
