Gold Cup logoWith the U.S. men’s national team supplanting Mexico in this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup final, viewership grew for Fox Sports 1 but declined for Univision compared to numbers from the 2015 final.

English-language coverage of the U.S. team’s 2-1 win over Jamaica on Fox Sport 1 drew 1.8 million viewers, up 117 percent over the 2015 championship match between Mexico and the Reggae Boyz. Fox also saw a record number of viewers on its digital platform, Fox Sports GO. An average minute audience of 71,742 tuned in to the final, the largest soccer audience to date on the platform. While the 2017 Gold Cup final viewership showed strong gains over the previous title match, viewership was down 17 percent from the 2013 final (U.S. vs. Panama), which aired on the Fox broadcast network.

Univision, on the other hand, saw viewership drop precipitously as a result of Mexico’s semifinal exit at the hands of Jamaica. Two-and-a-half million viewers tuned in to the Spanish-language telecast, down 60 percent from 2015, but up slightly from the 2.3 million who watched the 2013 final.

Despite the slump in ratings on Univision, however, the 2017 final was the most-viewed U.S. Gold Cup match (excluding those vs. Mexico) on any network since the 2011 semifinal between U.S. and Panama. Univision did not include in its news release specific viewership metrics on its digital platforms, but did say that the Gold Cup garnered more than four million video views and one million streams across its digital platforms the entire duration of the tournament.

In an agreement announced in November 2016, Fox extended its Gold Cup rights through the 2019 tournament. Fox also holds the rights to the 2021 FIFA Confederations Cup, and the World Cup from 2018 through 2026. Univision is in the midst of a long-term deal with CONCACAF for the rights to carry the Gold Cup through 2021.
