The New York Cosmos and New York Red Bulls each had a positive July in North American Soccer League and Major League Soccer action thanks largely to the contributions to midfielders Eric Calvillo and Daniel Royer. Media members took note of the Calvillo and Royer’s impressive stretch, awarding them Player of the Month honors.

Royer earned the award on the back of six goals and an assist to help the Red Bulls claim victories in all four of their league matches in July. His streak began with a goal in the team’s 3-2 win over the New England Revolution on July 5 and then continued with two more tallies in the 5-1 beatdown of the San Jose Earthquakes. The Austrian international kept the momentum going with a goal and an assist in an away win at Minnesota before closing the month with another two-goal shift last weekend in a 4-0 win over the Montreal Impact. Before July, Royer had netted four goals through 17 appearances.

Calvillo, has been a revelation for the Cosmos over the past month. After making just four appearances since signing with the Cosmos last year, Calvillo, 19, has taken advantage of his first string of consecutive starts, bagging three goals and an assist in four starts in July. The U.S. youth international has made a strong case to be a permanent fixture in the Cosmos’ starting lineup by scoring a scrappy winner in the team’s 1-0 win over Edmonton in the Spring Season finale before burying two crucial goals to lift the Cosmos over first-place Miami FC in the Fall Season opener at MCU Park. His composure and 94.5 percent passing accuracy out of the midfield was also a boon for the Cosmos throughout July.
