The 25th team in USL has officially been announced and that team will be called Rio Grande Valley FC.

The south Texas based team will join the league next season. Owned and operated by Alonzo Cantu, owner of the NBA D-League Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the team will play in a brand new 10,000 seat stadium modeled after MLS team Houston Dynamo’s BBVA Compass Stadium. They will also serve as a hybrid affiliate of the Dynamo.

“We have great confidence in Alonzo Cantu, who has a proven track record in business and sports in the Rio Grande Valley,” said USL CEO Alec Papadakis. “This vibrant economic market with a population of 1.3 million enjoys a long tradition in soccer. RGVFC is a first-class sports organization that will treat the passionate south Texas soccer fans to a state-of-the-art 10,000-seat soccer-specific stadium – now under construction – which surely become a source of pride in the region.”

If the stadium size sounds ambitious it’s because it is. Currently only Sacramento Republic FC average more than 10,000 fans per game. On top of that, the next highest average is just above 6,000. The team in south Texas believes that this could be a great platform for growth, and while it seems a bit pushy to assume that kind of attendance, the San Antonio Scorpions in the NASL built their 8,000 seat stadium in 2013 with the intent of expanding should the team enter MLS. The same ambitions may exist with Rio Grande Valley FC.

While Rio Grande Valley FC has been announced as the 25th club, unofficially it is the 26th as Orlando City FC has already pledged to place a new USL team in Florida after breaking affiliations with Louisville City FC. The team will be the second USL side in Texas alongside the Austin Aztex.
