Atlanta United has announced that they have acquired United States Men’s National Team defender Greg Garza from Liga MX side Club Tijuana. The deal will see Garza join the MLS expansion side on a season-long loan.

Atlanta acquired the 25-year-old’s Discovery Rights from the Columbus Crew SC in exchange for a conditional second-round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.

Atlanta United Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra commented on the signing, stating that the newly signed defender fits the club’s style.

“Greg is a quality left back who’s profile fits in nicely with our style of play,” Bocanegra said. “He has the ability to get up-and-down the line to contribute to both sides of the ball, and his experience in Mexico, along with the U.S. National Team, brings another quality dimension to our team.”

The Texas-native is a youth product of Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, who failed to provide the defender with a senior contract. After a brief stint with Estoril Praia, Garza joined Club Tijuana in 2011, where he has made 66 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.
