Gulati says U.S. results are “not what we’ve hoped for”

The U.S. Men’s national team is riding high off of a dominating 4-0 victory over Costa Rica but comments before the game by U.S. soccer president Sunil Gulati shows a surprising disappointment in the team’s recent run of form.

“Results are what matters — everyone understands that,” said Gulati during during a scrum with reporters before the Costa Rica match. “The results over the last 18 months, overall, have not been what we’ve hoped for — especially in the official competitions.”

The competitions Gulati references are the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup where the United States crashed out in the semi-finals — and the subsequent failure to secure third place. This was followed by the United States being unable to win a spot in the upcoming Confederations Cup by losing to Mexico this past October. Then came the World Cup qualifier loss to Guatemala in March.

In the lead up to the Copa America Centenario, Klinsmann made it very clear that the United States needed to do well in the competition by making it, at the very least, deep into the knockout stage.

Gulati adrees.

“It’s the official competitions that matter the most, and we haven’t been up to where we’d like to be,” said Gulati. “We’ll look at everything at the end of this competition. I don’t get too high or too low based on one game, especially when it’s a game against a very good team.”

This is the first time Gulati has spoken openly about the recent run of disappointing results that has served to vex fans of the U.S. National Team. Of course, those bad vibes ended with yesterday’s fantastic performance against fellow CONCACAF members Costa Rica.

However, Gulati didn’t eliminate the possibility that Klinsmann’s job as the team’s head coach relies on him getting results in the Copa America. That means advancing in the tournament, and perhaps, making a serious run.

The U.S. is not out of the woods yet. A loss to Paraguay in the final group stage game will eliminate them from the competition. They will be playing that final group stage game in Philadelphia on Saturday night.

This guy knows zero about soccer!!!!! He’s a business man. I would have fired klins right after the Mexico vs USA lost but he has no idea of soccer.
He could have gone after anceloti, mourinho, the crazy argentine coach, who wouldn’t coach USA.

    This is all HIS doing.
