Schalke Head Coach Markus Weinzierl extended the invitiation to the 18-year-old attacker to join the first team’s training camp in Spain which kicked off this week, citing the potential Wright has shown with the youth squad since signing with the Bundesliga club early last year.
Weinzierl also indicated Wright could have a real shot at working his way into the top team, saying, “We don’t take anyone just to fill spots, we only take players who we see potential in.”
Schalke’s U-19 team entered the winter break leading the table of the Junior Bundesliga’s Western region. Wright contributed greatly to the team’s good standing by notching six goals and eight assists through 13 appearances. He also netted three goals for the team in the back half of last year’s season after leaving the Cosmos and signing with Schalke.
