Hayley McCall announces retirement from Sky Blue

The roster keeps getting thinner for Sky Blue FC.

The latest subtraction from the roster is Hayley (Haagsma) McCall, a steady and durable midfielder.

McCall, who got married during the off-season, announced her retirement from professional soccer today. She joins Aubrey Bledsoe and Cami Levin (expansion draft), Nadia Nadim (trade), Brittany Cameron (transfer) and Katy Freels (retirement) in the revolving door for Sky Blue FC.

With this latest retirement, Sky Blue FC is especially thin at midfield. This may mean more playing time for Kim DeCesare, who missed much of last year with injury, and Nikki Stanton, who is getting valuable playing time overseas. Rookie Raquel Rodriguez, the second overall draft pick out of Penn State, and Sarah Killion, entering her second year, will bear the responsibility of controlling the midfield for Sky Blue this summer.

“I am certainly going to miss the entire Sky Blue FC organization, including the amazing fans, the dedicated staff, the coaches, and of course, my friends and teammates,” McCall said of retirement. “I feel tremendously blessed to have gotten the opportunity to play professional soccer and to play for an organization like Sky Blue FC, where you are invested in as a person and not just as a player. The last two years have been unforgettable, and I will always be grateful for where this beautiful sport has taken me.”

McCall was a second round pick, taken 15th overall by Sky Blue FC in the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft. The Texas Tech graduate missed her rookie season after suffering a torn ACL in her left knee during a preseason match. After a vigorous rehabilitation program, she worked her way into the starting lineup last summer, making 15 starts in 16 appearances. She had a goal and an assist.

“We want to thank Hayley for everything she has done for the club over the past two years,” said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. “Hayley showed last year what an important player she can be at this level. We wish her the very best in all her future endeavors. ”

Sad to see these early retirements….these women play for the love of the game, as there is not much career money to be made if you are not on the national team. I guess “it is what it is”. Life goes on…..
