Last week, U.S. international Herculez Gomez made the decision to come back to MLS and sign with Toronto FC.

Was it all about the money? Not exactly. In an exclusive interview with EoS, Gomez reveals he turned down a bigger offer from the New York Cosmos to join MLS.

“It was just a better package for me with the way things were to come back to MLS,” said Gomez. “I’m not talking financially, because I think to be quite honest, the Cosmos would have won that.”

The striker claimed that it was always his intention to return to the league that he left five years ago. However, it was a late push by Toronto FC that helped the Canadian side secure his services.

“It was my intention to come back to MLS and the timing was just right,” said Gomez. “When things started getting serious and Kansas (City) started getting less serious, TFC kind of came out of nowhere and that was a very pleasant surprise.”

A big factor was reuniting with former Colorado Rapids teammate Greg Vanney, who is now in charge of the Toronto outfit. Combine that with the opportunity to play along side Giovinco, Jozy Altidore, and Michael Bradley and the striker’s decision was made that much easier.

“At the end, the relationship I have with Vanney previously from being his teammate, just having the same philosophy, and the opportunity to come into a team that is as exciting as TFC is, I just felt it could be a new adventure and an impactful event for my family,” he said.

The striker did have high praise for the New York Cosmos and in particular Sporting Director/Head Coach, Giovanni Savarese.

“Giovanni was great from the get-go,” he said. “He’s just an unbelievable human being. Just everything; the talks that we had and what not, they were very serious discussions.”

On Saturday night, Gomez came on as a second half sub and notched a little more than 20 minutes of play in his debut for Toronto FC against the New York Red Bulls.

At this point in his career i would have thought that playing for more $$$ and being able to be a first choice option at forward under a coach you respect would be better than taking less money to be a bench option…but to each their own.

    • slowleftarm

Nah, I would’ve thought playing in top flight games in front of packed houses would have been more important than earning a few more bucks to play in minor league games in front of tiny crowds in the lacrosse stadium. Looks like I was right.

      • Anonymous

Nycfc still lost to the Hempstead cosmos

        • slowleftarm

Actually the game was a draw but I’m not an NYCFC supporter so that jibe doesn’t really bother me. It just made the next round of the open cup easier for the Kings of NY.

      • Nycsportspunk

Top Flight and MLS in the same sentence is the funniest thing you haver ever said.

        • send over the RFP

globally yeah they’re not even close (maybe a top 40 league?) but in the US cmon son

          • slowleftarm

Top 5 league outside of Europe I think. Brazil, Argentina and Mexico are better. Anywhere else?

          • mook

Top 40 maybe? Way to pull a number out of your ass.

        • Sammy the Red Bull

Actually the statement is entirely accurate for U.S. and Canada. Does MLS stack up with the top leagues globally? Of course it doesn’t. I would rate it between League 1 and the Championship in England. But it is definitely the highest level in this country.

          • BulletToothTony

LOL. Top tier Championship. The best in the playoff for promotion. Every team in this league would destroy League 1 teams.

      • Geez

        Let it go already.

  • OpenCupFan

He should send the Cosmos a card to thank them for his new mls deal. Without the interest from the Cosmos he would never have gotten that deal.
    .
Yet another way Cosmos are positively affecting players in the mls. You’re welcome.

    • LOL

      see my name

      • slowleftarm

        Here’s what actually happened:

Herc: wow, no offers from MLS, guess I’ll take the Hempstead offer. At least I’m sure to get first-team minutes and the pay is good.

Toronto: Herc, we’ll take you as sub although we aren’t going to pay you as much as that minor league team. Still, you’ll be playing meaningful games in real stadiums.

        Herc: I’ll take it!

        • Luis

You are obsessed with the Cosmos. Please seek help.

I know, I think it’s funny he ran back to the league that conspired against him the last five years. Funny.

    • Jukebox Pony

I thought that was strange also, however he did express wanting to come back while in MLS, but was not happy the only team he could join was, Sporting Kansas City. It’s even more horrible how Sporting Kansas City gave up his rights once his form went down.

      • Jukebox Pony

He express wanting to come back while in Liga MX…

        ~My mistake~

  • Dr.love of soccer

Only if cosmos where in MLS, they would just be another big city team with big names.
If cosmos where in MLS, they would probably have the biggest names in MLS besides galaxy.
Let’s be honest, NYC= cosmos and galaxy is LAs team and with LA2 and Miami coming in, MLS is about to get DP crazy.
Imagine all the sexy dps in MLS, with galaxy, LA2, NYC,Miami.
Too bad I can’t say red bull, they have a cheap owner with a NEW YORK team.
In conclusion, if I live till 100 years, maybe MLS by then will have 32 teams with 3 teams in LA and NY, by adding the Aztecs and cosmos.
LA and NY can easily have 3 teams.

    • OpenCupFan

There aren’t enough good players in mls to fill one team and you think 32 is a good idea?

soccer is the one sport where there is not nor will there ever be a shortage of talent. as the teams get richer/smart we’ll see more smart buying of south american cast offs like Juninho out in LA

        • send over the RFP

and that new guy the cosmos just signed, for that matter

        • Dr.love of soccer

Exactly, I hate how soccer fans in America think MLS will get worse with more teams. It’s total bs, MLS has a good future because every league in the world knows that MLS will buy young talent from all over the world and then keep them or sell.
          Not
As a matter of fact, MLS can be powerful at this moment but their salary cap and Garbers rules are holding back the league.
If MLS reaches 30 or 32 teams, imagine all the talent from America or the world MLS will have, it’s like creating a super world league.
No matter what, MLS needs around 30 teams to reach it’s potential globally and locally, then an MLS2 will definitely be needed.
Future west teams = Vegas, Sacramento, San Antonio.
          Future east teams= st.louis, Charlotte,Indy.
          That makes 30 teams.
If it’s 32, then the last 2 spots will be very expensive.

          • OpenCupFan

It’s hard to believe mls could get worse.

            • slowleftarm

If it did it would probably look like NASL. Well it would have to get much much worse for that to happen.

          • storms

that ‘not’ is freaking me out – was that a Borat-esque attempt at humor? I agree with everything you said except the salary cap comment – a big selling point of the league to fans at home and abroad (MLS has a surprisingly large viewership in Europe) is the relative parity. letting LAG or NYCFC (even though I’m a fan of their’s) dominate the league every year would be bad.

            • Dr.love of soccer

It’s was a typo, it when in.
It was not my intentions of putting the word NOT.

    • storms

let’s slow down on the ‘LA can have 3 teams’ talk, they have a hard time filling up the stadium of one

      • Dr.love of soccer

Galaxy is more Orange County and beach coast cities, plus original fans.
LA2 will be a mix of everything I believe.
But a 3rd team in a different LA region would be also gold,we talking about 20,000 seats.
What if galaxy move to downtown or make a surprising waterfront stadium by San Pedro. You should go to the LA region or google the region.
If red bull survive or rebrand and cosmos get their stadium, they will be in MLS one day.
Like I said before, cosmos would have the biggest names in MLS before galaxy,NYC,Miami ,LA2. It’s the cosmos name people.

        • slowleftarm

Problem is no one under 40 cares about the Cosmos name/brand.

          • Dr.love of soccer

I think you’re wrong and you never want to be wrong but it depends which state and region you’re talking about. Is red bull relevant where I live, nope, zero.
My buddies just know red bull because of Henry and Marquez and they always say, is it own by formula one and I say not red bull, the actual red bull company.
My buddies watch all kind of soccer, well the main 5 leagues In the world plus ligaMX, argentine d1,and MLS.
So if you think red bull is more relevant than cosmos, then you gotta be smoking something real good.
No way in hell, red bull is know in the United States or world, more than cosmos. As a matter of fact, cosmos are know more outside the US and the best know teams from MLS are galaxy, NYC and ……… I guess Seattle.
The next teams that will have a big boom around the world, are miami and LA2.
Too bad your owner doesn’t wanna rebrand and get serious.

            • John

Please the Cosmos are a joke now. They are a minor league team that no one in NY cares about , no press, no media, no fans.

The brand has been destroyed, the 1970’s Cosmos were fun, good and drew fans, Cosmos 2.0 are no where in a no where league.

New York does not care about minor league teams.

              • Dr.love of soccer

Earthquakes, sounders, impact, whitecaps, and people are asking for the surf and Aztecs to come back. You do realize what your saying right.
New York has too much competition, why would cosmos get attention, they gotta make it happen.
Same thing with NYC, red bull.

                • Anonymous

If there’s so much interest in the Cosmos brand, how come they can only manage 3000-4000 in attendance? The answer is that they are simply not as relevant as you believe they are. I won’t argue that the original Cosmos were huge. The current team, however, needs a lot of work to even approach the old team in the public consciousness. As it stands, they’re stuck in the NASL, which lacks the marketing to really establish itself in the mainstream.

Barring the dissolution of NYCFC, I don’t see the Cosmos entering MLS at this point either. I don’t think MLS is really into its clubs cannibalizing each other. Unless you think Long Island by itself is a viable MLS market, NYCFC and the Cosmos would basically compete for the same fans. At least the Red Bulls and NYCFC have a river between them with one extending their market into New Jersey.

            • slowleftarm

What are you talking about? RBNY are on national TV all the time, have one of the nicest stadiums in the US, are near the top of MLS and draw about 5 times what Cosmos draw. Yet Cosmos are still more “relevant” because Pele played a few games for some other now defunct team also called Cosmos 40 years ago? Wow.

    • Guido

You shut your pie hole! Red Bulls are Jersey! Jersey Shore forever! Now when do we play NYCFC again because that’s the only time I watch a game.

  • US Soccer Fan

it seems that 1st division soccer in MLS and the higher level of play there, even from the bench, is more valuable to many players of that caliber.

Interesting that he wanted to avoid the 2nd division cosmos even with more money being offered, they should be focused on up and coming young talent anyhow and feed players up to MLS b/c they have done a very poor job of that so far.

  • Larry’s A Simpleton

I guess like the rest of the world (except for Sweden) Gomez just isn’t impressed with the f.cosmos and the frauds they are. but hey, lets keep pretending the f.cosmos are relevant.

bring me my wine and cheese!

mls McWendys aren’t even popular in their own cities.

      • Larry’s A Simpleton

wow you are one bitter dork. the naslol will never pass mls. the naslol is outclassed by mls in every way.

are you seriously that dumb or are you that desperate to make the naslol that relavent? 30000 > 3000 and thats just in nyc. mls averages 21000 per game. what are they getting in the naslol?

keep both hands on the wheel cuppy and never let go of your dreams. but the realty of the sidtuation is nobody cares about the f.cosmos or the little league they play in. must really suck to be you.

        • Luis

We still beat your plastic team you dumb piece of shi*

          • Guido

You tell him Luis! He’s never felt the thunder of 3000 strong in Hempstead….he doesn’t feel the true passion for a soccer team that just took the name of a defunct organization in order to capitalize on nostalgia. That’s real love of the game. Real soccer is a great game played in front of an empty stadium.

          • Larry’s A Simpleton

is that all you got to hang your hat on louie? hold on tight and never let go!

lets talk attendance: 30000 > 3000. 18000 season tickets for nycfc. how many for the f.cosmos? nycfc set all sorts of records for merchandise sales. nobody buys those ugly tee shirts the f. cosmos wear. all sorts of coverage in the newspapers and on tv for nycfc. nobody in the media even knows the f.cosmos exist.

nycfc and mls all sorts of relevant. the f.cosmos and the naslol not so much. another jerky boy f.cosmos fan lost at sea!

  • Kevin

They were, relevant when they beat NYCFC. Or,as slow left likes to say advanced because he can’t bring himself to say the Cosmos won the game. As for this player or another one, it doesn’t matter. What matters is what plan do the Cosmos have about their future, where r they going and who r they going to attract fan wise and player wise..I would love to know the ultimate goal for them

    • slowleftarm

They didn’t win the game. The game was a draw and they advanced on PKs. And I’m not an NYCFC fan so the result didn’t mean a thing to me. If anything I was happy about it because it meant an easier open cup for RBNY. Remind me what happened in that one again?

      • Luis

They still won the game you dumb Fuc* lol remind me how we beat your ass in 2014? Or does your little brain not go that far? lol dumb fizzy drink consumer

        • slowleftarm

Wow you are dumb. The game was a draw. In the record books, the result is a draw. They won the PK shootout all so they could get thrashed at RBA. The 2014 result was against a reserve RBNY squad. You guys still trying to hang your hat on a win against a second string? You saw this season what happens when a decent MLS side takes a game against Hempstead seriously and it ain’t pretty.

          • Larry’s A Simpleton

lol! louie is another f.cosmos fanboy who got smacked in the face by a 2X4 named reality.

  • Kevin

cosmos won on pk’s, u just can’t give credit where credit is do and that’s fine, that seems to b your theme. The Red Bulls crushed the Cosmos. I was there i know what happened and immediately came on this site and said how impressed I was by their play. The year before u couldn’t give credit to the Cosmos for beating ur boys, regardless that the Bulls used a very similar line up in the next MLS game…what do u expect me to do while fans of completely other teams and leagues jump right into a Cosmos forum and bash them. Most of the time u and ur buddies r the first ones on the forum, which is totally pathetic. Of course iM going to defend them. I know what they are, I don’t care about them being worldwide when they aren’t. U’ve seen my posts im a realistic Cosmos fan but I’m also a die hard, so I’m going to defend them against guys who have no clue about their roster or just literally make stuff up like.

    • slowleftarm

Still talking about the 2014 win over a RBNY second string team? No Robles, Henry, Cahill, Miller, Dax or Olave and you’re calling that a first choice RBNY team? Give me a break.

  • OpenCupFan

NASL is closer to mls than mls is to any league – ie NASL will surpass mls b/f mls even gets close to LigaMX or any league in Europe or S.America. Oh wait, mls might be better than the Dutch third graders cup – maybe. Probably not though.

Also, NASL is doing better in year five than mls was doing in year five and NASL is excelling w/o help from USSF
            – let’s see how mls does when it can bundle the USMNT games for a TV deal.

            • slowleftarm

I do want pro/rel but the rest of your post is nonsense. NASl attendance this year is less than half of MLS’s attendance in 2000 (its 5th year) and 2000 happened to be the lowest figure in MLS history. We saw NASL couldn’t win a game against a league made up mostly of MLS reserve sides. What will your response be? Let me guess, something about bush league McWendys. Haven’t heard that before.

  • Hydrahamster

With the NPSL on board with merging with the NASL in the near future, the only thing they are missing is a birth into a major competition for the top season finishing NASL clubs. It will be hard to be taken seriously by some soccer fans when the biggest competition is the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and the best TV deals are ESPN3 and One World Sports. It’s a great start for a young league, but major tournaments are great for more exposure, money and talent. Those three things will bring in more fan support and better TV deals if done right. Since the NASL are a young league, I rather see them doing things player development wise and less on buying older players. They need to follow Liga MX, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, Netherlands, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Italy and Spain’s league examples. MLS is a horrible example. One decade in and they finally started a homegrown system. I know the NASL is still young, but they need they’re clubs to match other professional clubs in great leagues. There is so many weaknesses MLS have that can turn on them easily.

There needs to be more NASL teams with reserve squads in the lower division and they need to start planninga youth squad league for the u-23’s and below. Those things are key to success. The Cosmos need to start building more.

    • clarification

The Cosmos already have a reserve team in the NPSL. The Cosmos B team just won the NPSL title 2wks agomon front of 18,227 fans in Chattanooga.

Other NASL teams can follow suit if they can afford it.

nasl teams like the cosmos will never be close to what MLS has in terms of players and fan following, nasl is 2nd division in the US which has its place but the fans should be realistic and get there teams to focus on developing young talent to move up to MLS or Europe.

Look at the attendance – cosmos get 3000 in long island and NYCFC gets almost 30K in Yankees stadium.

if the nasl is so good and will surpass MLS why haven’t they won an Open Cup or produced more full national team players? Fans who push this nasl takeover agenda should not talk until nasl teams are winning the open cup every year and producing the majority of US Nat players like MLS does consistently.

    • Larry’s A Simpleton

its because f.cosmos fanboys are totally delusional. they cant face the reality of their brand being worthless. they thought the f.cosmos were going to march in and bring mls to its knees while ruling the soccer world in the usa.

then they got hit between the eyes with a 2×4 called reality. it absolutely kills them everytime they see those huge numbers at yankee stadium and those paltry figures at shuart.

they cant stand seeing all the attention going to nycfc while their farce of a team has to fight the ny liberty for space. im sure stover is polishing up his resume just hoping to get a job with nycfc. well someone has to get reyna his coffee!
