UCL Recap, Highlights: Atletico move Chelsea bus to advance to final

Staff Writer

Chelsea and Jose Mourinho‘s negative tactics proved vital in the opening leg. However, Atletico Madrid was too strong in the second, storming Stamford Bridge for a 3-1 victory away — and on aggregate.

The Blues started the match with six recognized defenders on the pitch, looking to frustrate the visitors. Chelsea was able to grab a lead after 30 minutes in the first half and it appeared they would be able to sit even deeper to preserve it.

Willian evaded two tackles on the right side, but he lost control of the ball. Cesar Azpilicueta picked up the loose ball and sent in a low cross. Fernando Torres slotted the ball with his first touch past Thibaut Courtois with a slight deflection off of Mario Suarez.

Torres didn’t celebrate after spending much of his formative years at the Spanish club.

However, the Blues lead didn’t last long.

Atletico equalized in the 44th minute. Tiago lofted a ball into the box that Francisco Juanfran turned back into the center of the box. It avoided three Chelsea defenders and Adrian Lopez shot into the ground and then looped into the net.

The one away goal was enough to secure Atletico’s advancement to the final, but they added to their advantage. Samuel Eto’o subbed on for Ashley Cole and his first involvement led to a penalty kick. Attempting to chase down a bouncing ball in his own box, he took down Diego Costa.

Costa stepped up to take the penalty after receiving a yellow for his delayed placement of the ball. He sent Mark Schwarzer the wrong way for his eighth goal of the competition.

Atletico put the semi-final away with a third goal. Juanfran crossed and Arda Turan hit the crossbar with his initial effort, but the ball fell kindly and he directed it into the net.

With the win, the Spanish side’s dream season continue. Leading La Liga, they now have Real Madrid and the Madrid Derby in the final in Lisbon.
