Day One, World Cup Round of Sixteen Results, Highlights: Brazil, Colombia advance

If you thought the excitement of the group stage matches would somehow dissipate in the Round of 16, you are sadly mistaken.

BRAZIL 1 (3) – CHILE 1 (2)

Brazil and Chile opened up the new round with an unforgettable battle for the ages. La Roja deployed a fearless, high press, offensive minded system against the host nation that nearly knocked Brazil out of the tournament.

Despite finding themselves on the back foot to open the encounter, Brazil scored first in the 18th minute as defender David Luiz converted on a corner kick. Fourteen minutes later, Chile’s Alexis Sanchez would level the score on a calm and collected strike to the far post, beating Julio Cesar to make it 1-1.

Both teams created a plethora of chances throughout the second half and into overtime, but neither could convert.

Penalties decided the match, and veteran Julio Cesar was the star of this encounter. The Toronto F.C. keeper stoned Chile on their first two attempts and saw Gonzalo Jara ring his shot off the post in the fifth round to put Brazil through to the quarterfinals.

Here are the match highlights:

Consider this James Rodriguez’s coming out party.

The 22-year-old creative midfielder certainly lived up to his role, netting a magnificent brace and leading his country in a dominating performance over a flailing Uruguay.

Rodriguez broke the monotony of the opening 28 minutes with a world class chest and volley shot, beating Fernando Muslera for the 1-0 lead. ‘King James’ would strike again in the 50th minute, following a headed feed and slamming it home to double the lead, and put the match out of reach for Uruguay.

Uruguay simply could not solve David Ospina. The Colombian keeper made several world class saves to preserve Colombia’s delicate lead.

However, it is quite clear that Uruguay lose their bite when Luis Suarez is not in the lineup (pun intended). The Liverpool man is currently serving a nine game suspension for his chomp on Giorgio Chiellini in their group stage encounter against Italy. While Colombia were also without Radamal Falcao, they proved themselves more than just a one-man side.
