When Galatasaray traveled to Stamford Bridge, Didier Drogba was expected to play a pivotal role against his former club. Instead, the big Ivorian striker was quiet throughout in the Turkish side’s 2-0 loss (3-1 aggregate) to Chelsea.

It was another African striker that impacted the game after just four minutes. Samuel Eto’o fired a shot that managed to sneak under Galatasaray keeper Fernando Muslera‘s right hand.

Eden Hazard also played a crucial role in helping Chelsea get to the next round of the competition. The young Belgian winger was involved in several attacking opportunities for the Blues. Hazard was tricky throughout and gave the Galatasaray defenders fits.

Chelsea doubled their lead in the game — and in the aggregate score — just before the halftime break. John Terry got his head to a Frank Lampard free-kick, but it was saved. However, Gary Cahill was on hand to fire home the rebound.

The visitors never troubled the Chelsea defense with three shots in the whole of the 90 minutes and no shots on target.

After two English sides were knocked out already and one on the brink, Chelsea may be the only Barclays Premier League side into the quarterfinals.

Other Champions League Results

1. Ronaldo, Real Dominant Once More- After doling out a 6-1 drubbing to Schalke in Germany, Real Madrid punished Schalke again. The second leg ends with a 3-1 score line, with Real 9-2 on aggregate.

The Spanish side put out almost an entirely changed side from the one that played in Germany with only Cristiano RonaldoSergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Iker Casillas keeping their place. It was a very young side for Madrid, but one Schalke would have rather seen Ronaldo not a part of.

The Portuguese winger added another two goals in Champions League competition, the first coming in the 21st minute. Gareth Bale, who started the game on the bench, subbed in for an injured Jese early on after the Spanish U-21 international left with an expected ACL injury. His immediately found Ronaldo unmarked who finished the chance easily.

Tim Hoogland leveled the match just ten minutes later. Hoogland’s strike from distance took a heavy deflection off of Ramos and left Casillas wrong footed.

Ronaldo then got his second in the 74th minute. He picked up the ball on the attacking half of the midfield line and drove all the way into Schalke’s box, with his low drive beating Ralf Fahrmann at the near post.

Real added a third goal a minute later. Alvaro Morata‘s shot was saved by Fahrmann and Ronaldo rifled the rebound off of the crossbar. Bale collected, played the ball to Morato, who found the back of the net.

With the way Real is scoring, no team will want to face them in the next round of the competition.
