Advantage Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho set his team up to defend, and defend they did, never venturing far forward. The Blues wanted to keep things even heading back to England and that’s exactly what they did. The Blue bus was parked, the keys were lost and Atletico Madrid couldn’t find a way in.

Score one for anti-football.

In a game that created little chances from both sides, Chelsea’s biggest scares came from injuries. Petr Cech left the game after clutching his shoulder in the 20th minute. As he made a diving save, David Luiz pushed Raul Garcia into him and proceeded to take a hard fall. John Terry would also leave the match with an ankle injury, 18 minutes from time after a hard challenge.

Over the course of the match, Atletico had two good chances. Gabi‘s well-taken free-kick was saved by Mark Schwarzer. Arda Turan missed wide with a header at the back post late on.

At the other end, Thibaut Courtois had not much to do against his parent club.

All will still be to play for in the second leg at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea will be without a few key players. Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel will miss out due to yellow card accumulation. Cech and Terry could very well miss out due to injury.

Either way, Chelsea are expected to tweak their ultra-defensive approach in the second leg and it should be a more entertaining game than the one on display at the Vicente Calderon.
