Home field advantage was in full effect as MLS teams pulled out vital results against their Liga MX rivals in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals.

The San Jose Earthquakes kicked off the festivities Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium with a 95th minute Alan Gordon equalizer against Toluca to end the match at 1-1. Meanwhile, two of the class sides in MLS, Sporting KC and the LA Galaxy, each pulled out victories at home. An 11th minute Samuel goal was all Los Angeles would need to hold off their border-rivals, Club Tijuana. Similarly, Sporting KC preserved an early strike by Homegrown product Kevin Ellis to walk out of Sporting Park with a victory of their own.

Each team now faces a steep challenge — building up their first leg results on the away leg in Mexico. The second leg of the competition begins next week, starting the 18th with LA visiting Tijuana. Both Sporting KC and the Earthquakes get their second shot on the 19th. CCL semifinals are tentatively scheduled for the first week of April while finals begin mid-month.
