NYCFC impress in 2-0 victory over St. Mirren

New York City FC may be an expansion side, but they looked anything but in a dominating 2-0 performance over St. Mirren at the City Football Academy in Manchester.

Captain David Villa put NYCFC ahead and Tony Taylor capped off the evening in the second half with a scorcher to pull his team ahead for good.

NYCFC started the match with Villa and Patrick Mullins up top, a midfield consisting of Andrew Jacobson, Ned Grabavoy, Mehdi Ballouchy and Sebastian Velasquez, with Andres Mendoza and Shay Facey at centerback, Jeb Brovsky and Chris Wingert at fullback and Josh Saunders in goal.  In a curious move, Ryan Meara was not available for the match.

NYCFC took full control of the match from the very start.  A Brovsky cross from the right sprung Ballouchy on net in the eighth minute, but his header went right at the keeper.  Minutes later, Velasquez produced a shot on net that was well saved.

As the wings generated opportunities, Andrew Jacobson and David Villa caused fits for the St. Mirren defense up the gut.  The former FC Dallas midfielder played trigger-man in the middle, sparking several attacking opportunities and shielding his defense from rare oncoming attacks.

A dominant half was defined by Villa, who opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, slotting home a left footed shot to put his side on top.

The second half saw wholesale changes as Kwame Watson-Siriboe and Francisco Martinez taking centerback duties, Connor Brandt and Josh Williams at fullback, Matthew Dunn, Poku and Pablo Alvarez taking midfield duties and Tony Taylor and Adam Nemec at forward.

It wouldn’t take long for the new-faces to break through.  Watson-Siriboe launched a ball over the top, finding Taylor.  Beating his defender, Taylor launched a rocket on net to put New York up 2-0 in the 69th minute.

St. Mirren managed to threaten a bit late, but this match belonged to NYCFC.  Kreis and company now look ahead to this Sunday where they face Brøndby IF at the City Football Academy.

Very impressed to say the least. That was lovely soccer to watch. I was impressed with the shape of our team and the crisp passing and movement. This has even more excited to support this team and for the new mls season. Great job by all the guys but especially Velazquez who made some great linking passes to set up our forwards. Kudos also goes out to the whole team really.
