After an opening night loss, the New York Red Bulls continue to accumulate draws. Being winless through the first five games is a cause for concern, but the growing injury list is even more worrisome.

After an up and down performance in Montreal, the Red Bulls saw Roy Miller and Armando leave the match prematurely. “I would put them both as day-to-day to be honest with you,” head coach Mike Petke told reporters on his weekly conference call.

“Roy is OK. It wasn’t an injury per se. it was more he felt something in his achilles dating back to the Chivas game last year, where he initially hurt himself.

“Armando, I haven’t gotten the final word yet,” he continued. “We’ll give him another day and then we’ll re-test him, but he had something going on with his hamstring.”

Dax McCarty didn’t take up his usual starting role in the middle of the midfield last weekend. As it turns out, that was a decision made by the technical staff in hopes to give their regular starter some rest for his aching back. Despite their best efforts, McCarty eventually had to come on earlier than planned after Miller’s injury.

“[Dax] has had some issues with his back, but that’s been on-going,” Petke revealed. “We made the decision early to rest him, but with the understanding that if anything happened, which ironically did happen, that he was fine to go in and play.”

The trio join defender Richard Eckersley and midfielder Tim Cahill who are currently on the IR.

NEWS AND NOTES

  • The Red Bulls missed Tim Cahill‘s presence in Montreal. Petke acknowledged that his progress from injury is going well and he is making strides to returning. Although Petke said, “Tim will play through anything,” he knows he will have to take precautions with the Australian international, especially with the World Cup coming later this season
  • Thierry Henry and Jamison Olave will continue to miss turf matches in order to keep them healthy over the course of the season with Petke noting, “I’m not willing to risk a player for his career or for the rest of the season five games in.” However, if it is a post-season match in the play-offs, Petke admitted that the situation would be different, hinting that the players could take part.
