New York Red Bulls midfielder Lloyd Sam suffered an injury scare against the Atlanta Silverbacks during their fourth round encounter in U.S. Open Cup play.

The Englishman, who was already limping minutes prior to his game-ending knock, took a vicious tackle to his ankle, forcing the him out of the match. Dane Richards managed to close out the encounter in his place.

Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch addressed the injury after the match, downplaying the potential severity of the knock.

“If you take the field ever being afraid of getting injuries then you are going to put yourself in a position to get injuries and you are never going to compete for anything. This is part of our world,” Marsch began, addressing his first team participants in the Open Cup match. “We think that Lloyd will be fine. We think it is a minor injury but we will continue to address it day-to-day here as we go. We are hopeful that he will be able to recover and hopefully be ready for Saturday.

Sam’s ailments were labeled “an ankle and a groin injury” by team staff. “He got wacked and his ankle turned a bit and at the same time it tweaked his groin a little bit too because it threw his leg out,” Marsch explained. “He thinks that they are both fairly minor. We will address where he is at, it is day to day.”

Sam has been an invaluable asset to the club all season long. Currently, he is second on the team in both scoring (4) and assists (3), adding a goal to his overall ledger during the Silverbacks encounter Tuesday night. He will be evaluated for his injuries prior to this Saturday’s Vancouver Whitecaps encounter.
