Injury Scare: Raul subbed off vs. Atlanta with ankle issue

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Quietly, Raul has enjoyed a healthy and productive season with the New York Cosmos.

On Sunday afternoon, however, that run of form took a bad turn.

Down 1-0 at the start of the second half against the Atlanta Silverbacks in Shuart Stadium, Raul apparently rolled his ankle on a cutback in the opposing zone. While he hobbled off the field and returned a minute later, the legendary Spanish striker could go no more, subbing off in the 53rd minute for midfielder Ruben Bover.

“He is hurting,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said after the match. “When he steps and makes a movement, he feels pain there. That is why he couldn’t continue in the game.

Despite his absence, New York still rallied from behind to tie Atlanta on an own goal. That accomplishment, however, does little to mask the gravity of his loss. Raul has been an iron man for the Cosmos all season long. He has played in every single match this season, sitting out just one due to fatigue (September 27th vs. Edmonton). He has tallied six goals on the year and three assists for his efforts.

“We will analyze [Monday] exactly what he has, but it doesn’t seem to be very serious,” Savarese said. “It does seem very painful.”

New York face Atlanta again this Wednesday.
