Jason Hernandez has been called up by the Puerto Rican National Team for its Caribbean Cup Qualifying match against Guyana on March 29th.

“It’s a really big honor for myself and my family to represent the country we’re from,” Hernandez said. “It’s really been something that’s been a question mark for awhile and I look forward to checking it out.”

Hernandez will join the national team on after New York City FC‘s match on Saturday. The centerback’s entire family is Puerto Rican and his parents moved to New York City when they were children.

He said the relationship between NYCFC and the Puerto Rican Football Federation opened the door for a callup.

“The opportunity to go over there this past offseason with New York City and experience the island and the feeling and passion everyone had for the game and a growing love for the sport, it was pretty undeniable,” Hernandez said. “For me to go over and try to help in any way, I’m going to try and do that.”
