Johnston brace puts USWNT past Colombia

uswnt wins

by DAVE MARTINEZ

It wasn’t quite the touchdown they scored against Colombia the first time, but it will do.

Defender Julie Johnston scored a brace to propel the U.S. Women’s National Team to a 3-0 victory over Colombia at Talen Energy Stadium.

Christen Press opened the scoring in the 26th minute, sending her shot over Colombia keeper Catalina Perez. Johnston nailed her first of two before the halftime whistle, volleying a Tobin Heath free kick. She doubled her total in the 79th on another set piece, beating Perez again — this time on a flick header.

Hope Solo sat this match in favor of goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who recorded her fourth career win and shutout in her second appearance of the year.

The next USWNT match comes this June against Japan, just short of their Olympic participation.
