Piscataway, N.J. (Sunday, July 6, 2014) – Sky Blue FC (3-7-7, 16 Points) welcomed second-place FC Kansas City (10-4-3, 33 Points) into Yurcak Field on Sunday night, with the visiting side claiming a 5-0 result. FC Kansas City was led by a brace from forward Sarah Hagen, helping to extend a nine-game unbeaten streak for her club.
“We took a risk and tried to press a little bit higher on the field tonight,” Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra said at the conclusion of the match. “Unfortunately, we gave up a pair of early goals. Rather than consolidating and righting the ship, we found ourselves down two more before halftime. Other than giving up a soft goal there at the end, we did play better in the second half, but we were just not able to bring the deficit within reach.”
FC Kansas City struck early in this contest, gaining the advantage in just the second minute of action. On the scoring play, defender Leigh Ann Robinson sent a ball into the penalty area from the right flank, and it bounced across the mouth of the goal. Sky Blue FC defender Caitlin Foord looked to boot the ball away, but FC Kansas City midfielder Erika Tymrak was able to chest the clearing attempt to her own feet, then finishing the possession by tapping the ball into the back of the net.

The visiting side extended its lead in the 9th minute, with midfielder Lauren Holiday registering her seventh goal of the season. The tally was the result of a corner kick taken by Holiday, who was somehow able to bend a shot on target directly off the corner kick that ripped into the far side netting. Following the well-struck conversion, FC Kansas City found itself with a 2-0 advantage.

In the 20th minute of this match, FC Kansas City continued its impressive start by hanging a third first half goal. Tymrak was at the forefront of the scoring play, sending a ball over the Sky Blue FC back line from the midfield, with the feed landing at the feet of Hagen on a breakaway. Hagen then quickly collected possession before firing a hard shot past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Brittany Cameron, making it 3-0 in favor of her team.

FC Kansas City upped its lead to 4-0 just before the end of the opening half, as Holiday took a ball down the center of the attack before firing a right-footed shot that hammered the left post. After it deflected off the post, Hagen again found herself in great position and was able to head the ball home to record her second notch of the evening. The official time of the goal was in the 42nd minute.

Sky Blue FC came out with an increased intensity when the second half got underway, finding itself creating some good opportunities that were turned away by FC Kansas City netminder Nicole Barnhart. One of its most dangerous chances came off the foot of midfielder Sophie Schmidt in the 76th minute, who hammered a shot on target from 30 yards deep, forcing Barnhart to make a diving punch-away to keep it out of the goal.

FC Kansas City eventually netted an additional tally in stoppage time to hang the final 5-0 count, as striker Amy Rodriguez was able to finish a feed from second half substitute Liz Bogus in front of the Sky Blue FC goal.

The final whistle was blown shortly thereafter to make the 5-0 tally official, bringing a four-game unbeaten streak for Sky Blue FC to a halt.

Sky Blue FC now enters a two-week break from action before returning home to Yurcak Field on Sunday, July 20th, to host the Washington Spirit at 6:00 p.m.
