Kelley O’Hara Tally Leads Sky Blue FC Past Portland, 1-0

PORTLAND, Ore. (May 24, 2014) – Sky Blue FC (2-3-4, 10 pts) earned its first road win of the season on Saturday night at Providence Park in Portland, Ore. against Portland Thorns FC (4-2-2) as defender Kelley O’Hara scored the lone goal for the New Jersey club. The 1-0 victory is SBFC’s second of the season, and O’Hara has now scored two goals in two games.

During the first half, both teams saw several scoring chances to take a lead going into the locker room, but the NJ club had the best opportunity in the 27th minute.

Sky Blue FC midfielder Sophie Schmidt was able to slip a pass under pressure to forward Monica Ocampo. Ocampo used her first touch to get inside the box, and then ripped a shot past PTFC keeper Nadine Angerer but the ball deflected off the right post for a Thorns goal kick.

Portland had eight shots in the first half and continued to apply high pressure coming out of the gates in the second half as Midfielder Meleana Shim skimmed the crossbar in the 46th minute.

Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Jill Loyden had a sequence of incredible saves that kept her squad in the game. In the 63rd minute, midfielder Allie Long played a ball from the left side of the field into the box, connecting with forward Christine Sinclair. Sinclair took a one-time shot and Loyden dove to her left to make the save. Four minutes later, Loyden made another diving save, this time denying Long.

In the 77th minute, the NJ club was called for a handball and Portland tried to counter with a quick restart. However, Loyden was able to block the shot and prevent the Thorns from getting on the board.

A foul called against Portland Thorns FC in the 84th minute would set up Sky Blue FC’s lone goal. Defender Christie Rampone took the free kick for the NJ squad and played a long ball into the box towards the right post. Teammate O’Hara was wide open and headed the ball past Angerer to put Sky Blue FC up 1-0.

Sky Blue FC would be able to hold on for the win and Loyden earned her first shutout of the 2014 campaign. Portland outshot Sky Blue 18-9 and Loyden recorded eight saves.
