Jurgen Klinsmann has narrowed his January camp down to 23 players as the U.S. men’s national team starts its 2015 campaign with friendlies against Chile and Panama.

The USMNT will play in Rancagua, Chile, on Wednesday, and then return home to face Panama a week and a half later at the StubHub Center in California.

Because the friendlies do not take place over official FIFA dates, the squad consists almost entirely of Major League Soccer players, who are in the middle of their clubs’ offseasons. In all, 15 of the league’s 20 teams are represented on the squad.

The exceptions to this rule are DeAndre Yedlin, who has yet to make an appearance for Tottenham Hotspur’s senior side, and Bobby Wood, who has struggled to find playing time for 1860 Munich.

The squad that will face Chile consists of:

Three goalkeepers: Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Jon Kempin (Sporting Kansas City), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Seven defenders: Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United), Matt Hedges (FC Dallas), Jermaine Jones (New England Revolution), Perry Kitchen (D.C. United), Shane O’Neill (Colorado Rapids), DeAndre Yedlin (Tottenham Hotspur)

Eight midfielders: Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Mix Diskerud (New York City FC), Luis Gil (Real Salt Lake), Miguel Ibarra (Minnesota United FC), Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution), Dillon Serna (Colorado Rapids), Brek Shea (Orlando City), Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew SC)

And five forwards: Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich), Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy)

This marks the first senior team call-ups for Jon Kempin, Dillon Serna, Shane O’Neill, Wil Trapp, Perry Kitchen, Steve Birnbaum, and Matt Hedges.

Six players who were a part of the camp will head back to their clubs. They are: Tesho Akindele (FC Dallas), Alex Bono (Toronto FC), Christian Dean (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Dennis Flores (Club Leon) Julio Morales (Tepic) and Oscar Sorto (LA Galaxy). These are U-23 players who were a part of the camp preparing for this fall’s Olympic qualification run. Because he hasn’t been capped, Akindele remains eligible to represent the Canadian national team.

Stop calling in Bobby Wood just because he plays in Germany!!!! The guy sucks. Maybe the worst player I’ve seen suit up for the national team in the last decade.

    Why Wondo?!? AJ.

If you notice this is an almost entirely MLS roster. That’s what the cupcake camp is for. European players are rarely called in.
