Jurgen Klinsmann’s reign as the coach of the U.S. Men’s National team has been full of surprises, but his latest 24 man roster for the final two World Cup Qualifiers may be the kind of surprise most fans of the national team would rather not have.

By omission alone, Jozy Altidore becomes the story of the latest 24 man roster release. Here is the USMNT’s full release:

GOALKEEPERS (3) :
Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

DEFENDERS (8) :
Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Maurice Edu (Stoke City), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Michael Parkhurst (Nordsjaelland)

MIDFIELDERS (8) : Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Roma), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

FORWARDS (5):
Clint Dempsey (Tottenham Hotspur), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Santos), Alan Gordon (San Jose Earthquakes), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders)

Sacha Kljestan returns to the fold, while an ailing Landon Donovan joins Clint Dempsey for the final run. Alan Gordon and a returning, red-hot Eddie Johnson will be looking to fill large shoes in the absence of Altidore. The addition of Gordon is only all the more curious by the omission of Chris Wondolowski who is a breathe away from tying Roy Lassiter’s single season MLS goal record, along with Terrance Boyd and Chris Pontius.
