A 90th minute goal by Sacha Kljestan decided the game as New York Red Bulls defeated Alianza FC 1-0 in CONCACAF Champions League group play on Thursday night.

Sacha Kljestan came into the game in the 62nd minute and had an immediate impact, feeding Gonzalo Veron on multiple opportunities. Eventually, Kljestan would find himself in front of goal and it was Veron who provided the perfect pass for the game winning chance.

The first half was all Red Bulls. They dominated possession and had the better goal scoring opportunities. The aforementioned Verón was active throughout most of the first half, having created a pair of quality chances. The script was similar to many of the Red Bulls’ previous games when the team was unable to score early. Slowly but surely, they surrendered more possession until Alianza seemed poised to strike first.

Luis Robles was the unsung hero of the game, making multiple saves off of some very suspect defensive choices by New York. His stops kept the team from conceding long enough for the offense to find the back of the net. It wasn’t pretty or easy but Red Bull was able to pull away and secure valuable points.

The win puts New York into a strong position to advance to the knockout stages of the competition. The Red Bull’s can win their group with a single point against Antigua GFC on September 27th.

A tight game that looked more and more like a 1 point ending for both teams. There were a lot of Alianza fans there last night too. Credit to Marsch for putting out a team to win. Sascha is at the top of his game and we needed it to pull out the win. Great job guys.

Veron is playing like a driven man. Created a number of chances and was unfortunate not to score. I was glad he picked up a nice assist on the game winning goal…he did the hard work on that one.
