RBNY II knocked out of playoffs by Rochester, 2-0

On a chilly night at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, the New York Red Bulls II fell to the Rhinos 2-0 after an early red card. The loss eliminates them from the USL playoffs.

The game shifted on a play in the 22nd minute. Steevan Dos Santos got in behind the Red Bulls back line and was hauled down by Konrad Plewa. The young defender was sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity; he was the last defender though they were 40 yards from goal.

Rochester had patient possession throughout the first half, but didn’t create too much real danger aside from the Red card. A corner kick was headed off the post by Tony Walls in the 34th minute.

The Rhinos wasted no time jumping in front in the second half. Out on the left wing, Dos Santos made a couple step-overs to his right to free space against his defender, and took a shot that curled into the far side of the net. It was a tight angle for the shot; watching live I thought he would cross it. Dos Santos made it work and Santiago Castaño could not keep it out.

The hosts didn’t rest on their lead. in the 69th minute, a shot by Kenardo Forbes was deflected and Dos Santos reacted quickly to redirect it into the net for his second goal of the night.

At times, the Cape Verdean forward looked like a men against boys with the Red Bulls’ defense. Dos Santos had a couple chances at completing his hat trick, including one where he lost a shoe and still managed to send a shot skidding just wide.

New York didn’t seriously threaten to erase their deficit. They had fervent claims of a handball waved away in minute 78; a penalty seemed to be their best hope of getting back into the match. Brandon Miller, who had a record 13 clean sheets in the regular season, picked up another with just a single save. The Rhinos have allowed just 15 goals in 29 USL games this season.

For the Red Bulls II, their inaugural season in USL has to be considered a success. They were one of just three MLS reserve sides to qualify. There’s no shame in losing to the Rhinos, who were far and away the best team in the league during the regular season.

Rochester Rhinos have been absolutely dominant this year. Move them up to the NASL!

    • BleedingRed

Is that really an upward move?

  • jimmy l

Not at all, the USL beat NASL teams in 7 straight games this past year, so the USL seems like a better league.

Plus NASL is still run by criminally indicted Traffic sports group, and their better franchises are moving to USL or MLS soon, best to stay away…

NASL was created by USL defectors. USL has stronger roots (PDL, Super Y, etc). Tough to compare structured league vs rouge league. Even though NASL claims “roots” to golden age of 70s, its still the youngest of the top 4 tier leagues.

Carolina RailHawks are 2-0 versus Galaxy, they must be better than every team in #bushleaguemls

Wait a second… the Cosmos game is going on right now. Why aren’t you there? It’s not like tickets are hard to come by.

Stop having nightmares about the RailHawks!

Almost missed it, but best part of your comment is you know the Cosmos schedule – me, I got no idea when your McWendys intramural soccer scrimmages are. No idea.

          • slowleftarm

I went to check the attendance so I could answer my own question and lo and behold, the game was being played at that very moment. If you were at the game but were posting anti-MLS rants during it, I guess that shows you how dull Hempstead soccer is. I certainly never am not checking this website when I’m at RBA. But that’s because the game is usually worth watching.

The only decent game ever played in the NJ mls McWendys was when the Cosmos showed up.

              • slowleftarm

You mean the one where they lost 4-1 at RBA and looked like they didn’t even belong on the same field as an MLS team (which they don’t)? Seriously, during the Cosmos game you had nothing better to do than troll an article about the Kings of NY’s reserve team. That tells you all you need to know about the excitement level at Hempstead games.
