Lade’s First MLS Goal Pushes Red Bulls Past Orlando

HARRISON, N.J. – Connor Lade’s first MLS goal kickstarted the offense for New York as they cruised to a 2-0 win over Orlando City on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena.

The much needed win came with a different lineup due to the congested schedule. Sasha Kljestan was on the bench giving Felipe the central attacking role and Sean Davis filled in as a defensive midfielder. Chris Duvall also returned to his right back role with Sal Zizzo getting the night off.

Despite the lineup changes, the first half was all Red Bulls as they controlled the game down the left side of the field with precision passing between Mike Grella and Connor Lade. Despite having over 60% possession, the frustration slowly started to mount as the team couldn’t net their first goal in over two games. However, that frustration was let out with a cathartic shot from left back Connor Lade who scored his first MLS goal in the 38th minute. Wright-Phillips assisted in the goal, playing a much deeper game on the field.

The pressure continued well into the second half as Orlando surrendered possession in hopes of catching New York on the counter. Several freekick opportunities led to the second goal of the game in the 59th minute as Felipe buried a dead ball at the top of the box. The curling effort eluded a diving Joe Bendik and solidified the game for the Red Bulls.

Orlando did try to push forward after Cyle Larin came into the game in the 60th minute but it only opened the game for New York. Gonzalo Veron’s 68th minute chance nearly put New York up by three on the evening. Luis Robles was also up to the task of keeping the lead intact with a save on Larin after a breakaway in the 76th minute.

The win moves New York into third place in the Eastern Conference with a tough trip to second Philadelphia on Sunday.

For once Lade doesn’t kick a field goal and sky it over the net! Congratulations Connor!
