Frank Lampard did not train with the rest of the New York City FC squad on Thursday, continuing to nurse a calf strain sustained during preseason.

Head coach Patrick Vieira said Lampard is currently doing individual training indoors and that the staff will monitor his situation over the next few days.

“I’m not concerned at all,” Vieira said after practice Thursday afternoon. “He will get better, it’s just a matter of time. Of course, I would like to have Frank on the field training with us because that would give me more options with players to use. It’s not easy because he wants to be on the field and he’s frustrated at the moment.”

Should Lampard be unavailable for the team’s season opener against the Chicago Fire, Thomas McNamara is likely to start in midfield for NYCFC.

As for a timeline for recovery, Vieira said he is not going to take any risks rushing Lampard back to the field.

“It’s just the start of the season and there’s going to be so many games and Frank is really important to the team but he will get back soon.”

Ol fat frank – if he misses the opener- should share some 9/11 jokes. I mean it was such a funny thing and all.

Hopefully Fat Frank recovers in time for the derby so he can get nutmegged by Grella again.
