Lampard returns in Manchester City FA Cup ouster

Fears of another injury for future New York City FC star Frank Lampard were short lived, with the former Chelsea great earning 23 minutes off the bench in a stunning Manchester City FA Cup ouster at the hands of Middlesbrough.

City saw their Cup hopes die in the fourth round of the tournament against the second-tier club.  Patrick Bamford put Middlesbrough up 53 minutes into the match, with **** striking the dagger in extra time.

Lampard entered the encounter for Spaniard Jesus Navas in the 67th minute, taking on his customary role at the top of Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield.  Boro played a stout defense on the evening, stifling even the red-hot Lampard en route to victory at the Etihad Stadium. That isn’t to say Lampard didn’t have his chances.  In fact, Manchester’s best opportunity may have been from a deflected Lampard shot which hit the post in extra time.

Nevertheless, New York City FC’s future DP can now count one fewer tournament to worry about while his Manchester City stay ticks down towards May.  City remain five points behind Chelsea for the top spot in the Premier League.  They are also very much a contender in the UEFA Champions League, with the Round of 16 set to commence on February 24th in a match against perennial La Liga powerhouse, Barcelona.
