Watch: Lampard scores City winner mere hours after NYCFC controversy

Manchester, England – With one emphatic header, Frank Lampard demonstrated why Manchester City risked the stability of their New York City FC franchise to retain his services

The 36-year-old midfielder played hero once more, coming off the bench to snap home a low header past Sunderland keeper, Costel Pantilimon, breaking a 2-2 deadlock en route to a 3-2 victory. That win, compounded by a 5-3 Tottenham victory over Chelsea, puts Manchester City even on points with the Blues, sharing identical 14-4-2 records and a +25 on goal differential atop the Premiership table.

Lampard’s goal comes mere hours after Manchester City and New York City FC revealed plans for a season long extension to his time in the Premiership.  The revelation sparked a new controversy, with several reports claiming the English veteran never signed for New York City FC in the first place.

NYCFC has yet to comment on it officially.

For Lampard and City boss, Manuel Pellegrini, the goal meant much more than just a victory, putting a clear and demonstrative emphasis on their months-long battle to maintain the midfielder in England.

Lampard is scheduled to stay with Manchester City through May.  According to a release by NYCFC, he is set to return to the U.S. at mid-year, assuming his supposed responsibilities with the fledgling franchise.  A muddied contract situation, however, puts those claims to question.
