An 81st minute goal by Jordan Allen torpedoed the New York Red Bulls in their second preseason game against Real Salt Lake on Tuesday afternoon.

New York’s line-up looked similar to what went out against the Portland Timbers last week, with a few notable changes. Justin Bilyeu and Sal Zizzo made their first starts of the year. Substitutes included appearances from homegrown signing Evan Louro in goal as well as new signing Hassan Ndam, who played 30 minutes. Other young players such as Brandon Allen and Derrick Etienne Jr. got significant minutes just before and after the halftime whistle.

Jordan Allen’s game-winning goal came off of a header from a cross against the run of play. New York played well and pressed RSL but couldn’t convert on significant chances in both halves. While wins and losses are not a priority during preseason fixtures, it is a healthy sign that the Red Bull system is pressuring teams early.
