NYCFC logoNew York City FC went a long way for its 2-0 victory at the Los Angeles Galaxy late Saturday night/early Sunday morning at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

The rookie Jonathan Lewis staked NYCFC (13-7-4, 43 points) to a 1-0 lead as he teased several Galaxy (6-12-5, 23) defenders on an impressive run and exhibition of close dribbling before curling the opening goal, in the 54th minute, under the crossbar. It was his first goal as a professional and one to remember.

Goalkeeper Sean Johnson helped keep NYCFC in the game with a series of impressive saves, five in the game in all, until his teammates managed to break through.

David Villa, the league’s leading goal-scorer with 18, scored an insurance goal in the 73rd minute as NYCFC moved passed Chicago and into second place in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference, within four points of first-place Toronto FC. The Pigeons won their second straight game.
