Life goes on: Backe, Halvorsen considered for Head Coaching positions

As the Red Bulls undergo a heavy makeover, the jettisoned have begun their search for new homes.

Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen reports Hans Backe has received interest from his former club “Östers IF” who have recently won promotion to the Swedish first division. Backe led the club to the Division 1 title back in 1989.

“I have had contact with Peter Johansson (Östers sports manager),” Backe tells the publication, “but I told him I’m not ready to make a decision. Öster is an option that is worth considering.”

“We have had a good talk. I’m in no hurry. I’m taking it easy. There is no need to comment on how interesting it is.”

The former Red Bulls coach led New York to three straight playoff appearances but failed to make it passed the conference semi-finals during his tenure.

Backe’s former assistant coach Jan Halvor Halvorsen is also being considered to lead a team. Norwegian division 2 side Bodø/Glimt have personally invited Halvorsen for an interview on December 11th and are expected to make a decision on their head coaching situation soon.

Meanwhile, back in New York, the one name that continues to circulate is that of former Aston Villa boss Gary McCallister, though team officials are exploring other options. Amongst those options could be that of former Red Bull Tony Meola whom, as I reported on SBI yesterday, has a meeting with Red Bull brass to discuss a possible future with the club.
