Former Red Bull Lindpere signs with Ostrava; explored Cosmos move

After four years in MLS, former New York Red Bull Joel Lindpere is back in Europe — this time with Czech side, FC Baník Ostrava.

The 32-year-old Estonian midfielder leaves behind a strong legacy in the United States. Lindpere is a two-time All-Star and was also named the New York Red Bulls 2010 Player of the Year, laying the foundation for a memorable three-year stay in Harrison. He set team records for games played in a season (34), games started (34) and missed all of 12 minutes in his debut year with New York, becoming one of the Red Bulls’ most reliable field players.

Overall, Lindpere featured in 104 total matches, scoring 17 goals and amassing 14 assists while carving a place in Red Bull lore. His stay at Chicago was less auspicious, featuring in 28 total matches, scoring just three goals and adding eight assists.

With his original four-year contract complete, “The Estonian Express” explored other options in the U.S. — including a move to the New York Cosmos. Sources tell EOS Lindpere’s representatives reached out to the NASL side, but talks quickly broke down over salary concerns. “Players and agents hear the name ‘Cosmos’ and immediately think money,” one source says. “That isn’t always the case with these Cosmos.”

In FC Banik Ostrava, Lindpere joins one of the Czech Republic’s most stable league one franchises, even as they are coming off of a forgettable 2012-13 campaign. Ostrava finished 14th in a 16-team table, but are just one of five teams who have featured in the top division every year since the inception of the Gambrinus Liga.

Their head coach František Komňacký will be looking to Lindpere for veteran leadership to help steer his young side back into league contention. He is expected to join Ostrava this week for training.

He has been training with them for a month now….there is money problems with Banik

  • I love Joel but giving money to a stationary tank doesn’t fit the Cosmos or their style of play would have been a waste. He was barley starting in Chicago.

I loved Joel Lindpere and wish he could have stayed at RB or in MLS. I hope he plays awesome for FC Banik Ostrava.
