There is a year left until the official arrival of New York City F.C., and the Big Apple is already getting a taste of what a Red Bull, NYCFC rivalry can mean in the transfer market.

EOS reported exclusive details yesterday putting rumors to bed connecting the Red Bulls to legendary Barcelona midfielder, Xavi.

Now, it’s NYCFC looking to make a swoop for the Catalan great. According to England’s “Telegraph,” Manchester City officials are showing “strong interest” in Xavi, and are busy putting together a plan to feature him for their 2015 arrival.

The report dovetails nicely with a few details from our report yesterday. Last week, Manchester officials revealed new head coach Jason Kreis would be joined by Director of Football Claudio Reyna and CEO Ferran Soriano in a trip to Florida to take in the MLS Combine.

The news left many scratching their heads, but details from our report Monday may give some clues behind the endeavor. Several Spanish agents representing many of Spain’s top star players happen to be in Florida to meet with MLS officials. Amongst that group? Representatives from Xavi’s camp, setting up a perfect opportunity to safely discuss plans without the glare of European media.

Unlike the Red Bull rumor, which was loosely sparked by a conversation between Thierry Henry and Xavi, New York City F.C.’s roots run much deeper with the midfielder as well. Both Manchester Director of Football Txiki Begiristain and CEO Ferran Soriano know Xavi well from their time in Barcelona. Both have also been vocal about implementing a “Blaugrana,” tiki-taka football style in England and with their New York satellite.

Hiring Kreis, a like-minded coach, is the first step in that implementation Stateside. Hiring Xavi would ensure a master of the style on the pitch to guide the field efforts.
