For anyone who was waiting for the next Geoff Cameron or Graham Zusi to show face last night, you’re still waiting.
In a dreadful display that featured the United States B team controlling possession for majority of the match, the U.S. could not muster any offense against Canada’s C team. While it’s only a friendly and most of these players will not make the trip to Honduras, the result is nevertheless extraordinarily disappointing.
What of the match in Honduras? Klinsmann said at the beginning of camp that 8 or 9 players would be brought to qualifying. Based on last night’s performance it’s hard to say anyone really deserves to go.
Other than Kyle Beckerman and Sean Johnson, no one would have received a grade better than a 5 on our Yank’s Corner ten point scale. Beckerman will definitely be on the roster as he’s been a longtime Klinsmann favorite. If Klinsmann opts for three keepers then Johnson may make the trip as well, but it’s hard to see the logic of bringing 3 keepers for one match.
No player was under greater scrutiny than Omar Gonzalez, with many hoping to see him stake his claim as Carlos Bocanegra’s heir apparent. The good news is he didn’t do anything that should automatically preclude him from that conversation. The bad news is that with the U.S. controlling a majority of the possession, Gonzalez was never really tested. Depending on how he looked in camp, he may very well be on the plane to Honduras. However, throwing him into the cauldron that will be Estadio OlĂmpico Metropolitano just seems like a lousy time to test his mettle.
One player missing from the game day roster that could have been a difference maker was Mix Diskerud. Other than Feilhaber, he was the only other player that possesses the skills that could have eradicated the logjam in midfield and given the U.S. that final offensive push. Considering his performance in Russia, it’s a mystery as to why he wasn’t tested against the Canadians.
Other than the above named players, who goes to Honduras? One has to figure Graham Zusi and Eddie Johnson will go based on past performances, other than that, no one earned a spot.
Hopefully the U.S. regulars can erase the bad taste that is this match and anyone who maybe a holdover stays on the the bench next Tuesday.

My latest at the @EmpireOfSoccer I look back at last night’s #USMNT stinker http://t.co/pZLY4fk3
I’ll never understand the love affair with Beckerman. Yes he’s a defensive stopper but he really offers nothing going forward. Including him in the team almost forces you to play counter. It’s another reason Michael Bradley is so important.
So was it better or worse that Lade wasn’t chosen to be part of this snoozefest? By the way, of the minutes that I did spend watching this game, I thought I was watching the Red Bulls again. The lack of ability to bring the ball to the final third was very familiar.
